Norm Updates

Peter Poobalasingam and Venkat Tiruchirapalli both gained IM norms as well as gaining enough rating points to take their ratings over 2300 and so entitle them both to claim the FM title.

All of these events are FIDE rated all play alls set in the same great hotel as the Uxbridge Congress, De Veres Denham Grove Hotel, Tilehouse Lane, Denham, Buckinghamshire, UB9 5DU.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from A2B Media we are pleased that GM Tiger Hillarp-Persson was able to deliver a free Master Class Wednesday 12th August at 9pm.  More than half of the players attended, and learnt much about positional Queen sacrifices!

The Masters event offers players (preferably 2150+) the opportunity of 9 competitive games of chess with the the chance to secure that all important norm.  Due to high demand, we have decided to run three Masters sections to offer as many players as possible the chance to play this kind of event.  We will be running two norm sections (hopefully one will offer GM norm opportunities) plus a third section which will be just as strong, with titled players, but without norm chances.  Contact us for full details!

The  Challengers event offers players (ideally rated 2000+ or graded above 130 ECF) 9 competitive FIDE rated games and for unrated players the opportunity to obtain a full FIDE rating in one event.  Players will be divided into equal strength sections of 10 players.  The winner of each Challengers section will receive a superb package of free entry to the next Uxbridge Masters, together with free accommodation at the venue for the duration of the event - a package worth £300.  A great way to pay for your entry to the Masters!

The Get Me Rated events does exactly what it says - it's aimed at players rated below 2000 (or graded below 150 ECF) who want to play 9 competitive games of chess in a friendly atmosphere with the opportunity to gain those all important rating points or obtain their first ever FIDE rating.  Players will be placed in groups of 10 according to rating / grade so that all the players in a group are of a similar strength.  By playing in this event, an unrated player will be assured of achieving a full FIDE rating as long as all the unrated players score at least a 1 point.  FIDE ratings now go down to 1201 so it is realistic for any player graded 60 ECF or above to obtain a FIDE rating.

Venue and Directions

De Veres Hotel, Denham Grove Hotel, Tilehouse Lane, Denham, Nr Uxbridge, Bucks, UB9 5DU is just 3 miles from both the M25 and M40 motorways, and 2 miles from Denham railway station.  Denham is a 25 minute train journey from Marylebone.

   By Car:  

From the South and M4, head north on the M25 to Junction 16 then join the M40 eastbound. Proceed to Junction 1 and follow the A40 (Gerrards Cross) then turn right onto the A412 at the traffic lights. Turn into Tilehouse Lane (second left). Continue for about 1 & 3/4 miles. Denham Grove is on the right.

From the North and M1, follow the M25 to Junction 17. Join the A412 southbound. Continue for about 3 & 1/2 miles then turn right into Denham Green Lane. When you reach the T junction turn right into Tilehouse Lane. Continue for about 1/2 of a mile. Denham Grove is on the right.

 By Train:   

Trains run from Marylebone to Denham station approximately every half an hour, a journey which takes 25 minutes.  Denham station is 2 miles from the venue. Piccadilly and Metropolitan lines run to Uxbridge or Rickmansworth (both 4 miles from the venue).  Players are advised to pre book taxis from the station to the venue.  Any player wishing to share a taxi should inform the organisers who will endeavour to put them in touch with others seeking to share.
