The Masters is a 9 round swiss that will offer players the opportunity to play exclusively stronger players and achieve GM & IM norms. The Masters is strictly open only to players rated 2050 or above (or graded over 180), titled players, and those who have qualified via a previous International Challengers section. e2e4 will invite at least 3 GMs to play, with at least 1 extra GM for every 10 paying players to ensure that GM and IM norms are possible. The Challengers is also a 9 round FIDE rated swiss open to untitled players rated over 1900, or graded above 150 ECF. For every 10 players entered, we will offer a qualifying place for a future Masters event free of charge. The Major is open to all players rated below 2000 (or graded below 170 ECF) who want to play 9 competitive FIDE rated games of chess in a friendly atmosphere with the opportunity to gain those all important rating points or obtain their first ever FIDE rating. Players entered will be split into sections of approximately 16-20 players according to playing strength to ensure that everyone gets competitive games. English players must be Gold members of the ECF, or upgrade their Silver or Bronze membership to Gold, prior to playing. FIDE ratings now go down to 1001 so it is realistic for any player graded 60 ECF or above to obtain a FIDE rating.

It's not practical for an event such as this to have an Opening Ceremony with the drawing of lots for colours, but we do believe that all players should be able to see that the draw for colours is fair, transparent and random. For those of you who have played in one of our events before, you will know that we like to be inventive when it comes to doing this. Colours will be determined by the number of goals scored in the Real Madrid -v- Manchester United Champions League game being played at 19:45 on Wednesday 13 February. If there are an even number of goals, the top seed in each section will play white in round 1. If there are an odd number of goals, the top seed will be black in round 1. Zero goals counts as an even number. The game finished 1-1, so the top seed in each section is white in round 1. |
Players make take up to three byes in any round apart from the last.

Refreshments Tea, coffee, alcoholic and soft drinks, sandwiches, snacks etc will be available, as well as a fully licensed restaurant, within the tournament venue for the duration of the event. Only refreshments purchased from the hotel may be consumed on hotel premises. Smoking No smoking is allowed within the hotel buildings. |
